Driver jailed for causing death to 10 cricketers

CHITTAGONG, March 11: A court here Thursday convicted the driver of a minibus and sentenced him three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 10,000 for causing death to 11 persons including 10 young cricketers of Chittagong, eight years back. Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate FM Fazlul Bari gave the verdict. The verdict came in absentia of Abul Kashem, driver of the human hauler, who remains absconding following the incident in 2003. Twelve young cricketers and an official of a local team of Feringee Bazar and driver of the tempo were critically injured as the tempo carrying them for a tournament at Fateyabad under Hathazari police station was dashed by a "Ranger" minibus coming from the opposite direction at Baluchara near Chittagong Cantonment Gate on the Hathazari Road on March 31, 2003.
