Driving vehicles on wrong side of the road

Sunday, 21 January 2018

POPULATION of Dhaka city is swelling as a result of increasing migration of people from villages. Dhaka is too crowded now to move, as there are serious traffic congestions on most of the roads till midnight. Traffic congestion in Dhaka is natural as there are too few roads in the city compared to the increasing volume of vehicles. But that should not be taken as an excuse for violation of traffic rules, as we often see vehicles being driven on the wrong side of the road in rush hours.
This may save some time, on some occasions, but it is a criminal offence that has multiple effects. It increases possibility of accidents by many times. In most cases, such violation of traffic rules is committed by influential people or vehicles belonging to them.
Newspapers are stuffed with reports of such incidents every day.
The police recently conducted a drive particularly against vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road, but unless such drives are made on a regular basis, it would not be effective. If the concerned authorities could ensure strict adherence to traffic rules, incidents of driving on the wrong side of roads could be stopped easily and permanently.
