Drought like climatic condition prevails in Rajshahi region

RAJSHAHI, Apr 20 (BSS): Severe drought like climatic condition has been prevailing in the region particularly in the vast tract of barind area for the last couple of days.
Side by side with dry barind area, the city-dwellers are being experienced hottest days of the season so far for the last couple of days that resulted extreme suffering.
Local Met office recorded highest temperature of 40.5 and 40.7 degrees Celsius on last Friday and Saturday respectively against the humidity of 10 per cent and 14 per cent while the Monday's temperature in the region was recorded at 38.8 degrees Celsius.
Besides, the Met office sources said only 3.2 millimeters rainfall was recorded on March 31 last and there is no rainfall since then.
The extreme sultry weather severely affected those persons whose means of livelihood depend on manual works due to the continuous drought like weather and long time absence of rail fall.
Talking to the news agency, officials of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) here said as a result of the abnormal fall in the ground water level, most of the hand driven shallow tube-wells have already become out of order in the region.
DPHE officials said the water level has gone down to 59 feet to 120 feet in the barind area particularly in Nachole of Chapainawabgonj, Niamatpur in Naogaon and Godagari and Tanore upazilas of Rajshahi district, which are commonly drought-prone areas of the region.
