NOAKHALI, Oct 19: Rampant sale, purchase and use of drug products have increased alarmingly at all the Upazilas in Noakhali district while the whole youth generation irrespective of male and female are being spoiled by taking these.
According to the sources, the contraband drug sellers are running brisk business in clandestine ways with various inhibited products like phensidyl, hemp, foreign wine as well as indigenous Bangla hard drink and fermented liquids at almost all the Upazilas in Noakhali.
The immoral drug sellers import the drug items from India, Comilla and other unknown places through different secret routes, especially via the Noakhali Upakul Train Express and Noakhali Express along with bus and trucks, allegedly in connivance with a section of corrupt cops and GRP personnel who collect monthly toll from the importers in a particular rate.
Sources said the drug elements carried by trains are taken down at Sonaimuri and Choumuhani railway stations wherefrom they are sent to particular stations of the upazilas of Begumganj, Senbagh, Companiganj, Sonaimuri, Chatkhil and Maijdee town with the help of local brokers and peddlers aided by unscrupulous cops.
In addition, drug elements are found in almost all the betel-cigarette shanties and tea stalls established near bus stands, bridges, cinema halls, fish markets, rickshaw and tempo stands from where rickshaw pullers, truck drivers and day labourers buy them at the dead of night. In many drink corners and groceries alcohol items are kept in the name of foreign juice in bottles with soft drink labels. They are sold in the name of juice.
Sources said around 50 per cent of rickshaw pullers, truck drivers and baby taxi pullers including young school and college students especially the teenagers whose guardians are expatriate are becoming drug addicts.
They go to the secret centers of drugs after dusk and arrange for hemp and drink party with meats, cigarette and chanachur for enjoyment and are committing other crimes while their guardians remain indifferent.
At present frequent incidents of theft have been taking place at the residential areas of the urban areas by the drug takers who commit theft for managing drug money, it is alleged.
