CHITTAGONG Sept 6: Drug smuggling through different points of Teknaf and Ukhiya borders into Myanmar is rampant.
Hundreds of pharmacies have been built up at different places, including the zero points, along the aforesaid border areas, sources said.
Sales representatives of some drug companies, in association with some pharmacy owners, are allegedly smuggling the same into the neighbouring Myanmar almost everyday.
Although bringing certain goods like fertiliser, diesel, etc. to the border areas is stated to be prohibited, there remains no bar to bringing consignments of live-saving medicines, it was stated.
Under the situation, loading vehicles with medicines, the smugglers arrive at the border areas and later, smuggled those into Myanmar evading the eyes of law-enforcers.
According to the sources, medicines manufactured by the Bangladeshi companies are freely sold in Myanmar markets.
As a result, smugglers are keen on smuggling medicines because those have a growing demand in the Myanmar market.
In the circumstances, the government has been urged to take necessary action in this connection, because it is being deprived of a huge amount of revenue everyday.
