DSE hosts awareness programme in Sylhet

Friday, 7 November 2008

SYLHET, Nov 6: With the turnovers hitting new highs recently, Bangladesh's premier bourse, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), organised investors' awareness campaign in Sylhet today (Thursday) to familiarise them with the growing stock market operations.
The DSE programme was arranged in the north-east divisional city of the country as part of its regular campaign to aware investors.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Member Mansur Alam, Executive Director Farhad Ahmed, DSE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Salahuddin Ahmed Khan and DSE Chief Operating Officer AFM Shariful Islam spoke at the event attended by a large number of investors.
Mansur Alam said the global financial crisis, brewing for a while, really started to show its effects in the middle of 2008.
"Around the world stock markets have fallen, large financial institutions have collapsed and governments in even the wealthiest nations have had to come up with rescue packages to bail out their financial systems."
"But the global meltdown will not have any impact in our market as our capital account is not convertible and foreign portfolio investment in Bangladesh securities market is insignificant," Alam said.
Farhad Ahmed said investors should remain alert on the company fundamentals ahead of investing.
"Before investing in the market, the investors should evaluate the company fundamentals and the potential risks involved in capital market," Ahmed said.
He said there should be proper dissemination of information on the company fundamentals and investors should learn different aspects of the stock market operation and market trends as well.
Speaking at the occasion, the DSE CEO urged the investors not to get panicked in present volatile stock market.
"There is no reason to be panicked, the market will bounce back," said the CEO at the awareness programme.
"Keep your patience, as ultimately you will gain from the market if you invest in good securities," he told the investors.
He asked the investors not to invest in overpriced securities with weak fundamentals based on any rumours.
DSE Chief Operating Officer said the stock market is growing to a new height to contribute more in the country's economy.
He further said DSE has a commitment to help broaden the securities market and the gradual expansion is the manifestation of this vision.
