DSE prime index crosses 5,000-mark

The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange – DSEX--- surpassed the 5,000-mark on Thursday after a week-long rally with turnover hitting second highest in this year as investors' buying spree continued. Meanwhile, the share prices of the United Airways (BD) Ltd fell by 7.63 per cent Thursday, a day after the private airliner cancelled all its flights for an indefinite period due to fund crisis. The share price of the Travel & Leisure sector company closed at Tk10.9 each at the DSE. Its price movement ranged between Tk 11.6 and Tk 10.7 during the trading session. The market opened on an upbeat mood which continued throughout the session. At the end of the session, DSEX jumped 47.20 points or 0.94 per cent to close at 5,026.92 points, which was the highest level since its inception on January 28, 2013. The two others indices ended higher. The DS30, comprising blue chips, soared 25.40 points or 1.32 per cent to close at 1,949.63 points. The DSE Shariah Index gained 19.09 points or 1.64 per cent to close at 1,181.67 points. The total turnover on DSE crossed Tk 11.0 billion mark and amounted to Tk 11.03 billion, which was 18.34 per cent higher over the previous session value of Tk 9.32 billion. Gainers outpaced losers as out of 301 issues traded, 159 advanced, 120 declined and 22 remained unchanged on the DSE floor. MJL BD was the day’s most traded stocks with shares worth Tk 656.80 million changing hands followed Beximco, Beximco Pharma, RSRM Steels and GP. Eastern Cables was also the day’s highest gainer, posting a rise of 19.97 per cent while Standard Ceramics was the day’s worst loser, slumping by 9.23 per cent. The total market capitalisation on DSE stood at Tk 3,364.93 billion against Tk 3,328.97 billion in the previous session. The port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed higher with its Selective Categories Index – CSCX – gained 115.36 points to close at 9,453.68 points. Gainers beat losers 109 to 100, with 16 issues remaining unchanged at the port city bourse that traded 21.46 million shares and mutual fund units with turnover value of Tk 704.93 million.
