Dhaka stocks closed mixed Thursday with the turnover falling below Tk 2.0 billion-mark for the first time in two months and a half.
The turnover dropped to Tk 1.82 billion (182 crore), the lowest since August 14 last when it had fallen to Tk 1.82 billion from the previous day's Tk 2.07 billion.
The turnover declined by more than two-thirds in almost one month from the highest Tk 5.91 billion recorded on October 12 last.
The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN) and the All Shares Price Index (DSI) lost 6.15 points and 4.55 points to finish at 2667.16 and 2211.23 respectively. But the DSE-20 blue chip index gained 13.26 points to close at 2305.03.
Beginning on a negative note, trading at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) seesawed throughout the whole session. The benchmark index lost around 20 points in the first 10 minutes of trading, then gained by mid-session, but finally finished in the red.
The gainers, however, outshone the losers on the day. Out of the total 223 issues traded on the day, 130 gained, 86 declined and seven remained unchanged. Of the top ten gainers, eight were from the worst performing Z-category issues.
"The lower turnover points to the fact that most of the investors remained inactive, making the situation alarming and they were awaiting some good news," said a stockbroker.
He further said the continuous downtrend of the market has made the investors panicky as there are some causes of concern including the possible impact of the global financial turmoil and possible fund withdrawal from the market to meet the expenses during the upcoming national election.
A capital market analyst said the market is always hungry for good news which is urgently required to bring stability in the market.
The market capitalisation rose marginally to Tk 964.29 billion from Tk 963.36 billion of the previous day.
The share price of Beximco Pharma rose 2.97 per cent to Tk 162.70, making it the turnover leader with shares worth Tk 267.23 million traded.
The next other turnover leaders on the day were Beximco Limited, Islami Bank, Titas Gas, Uttara Bank, ACI Limited, Lankabangla Finance Limited, DESCO, Beximco Textile and Square Pharma.
