DU admission-seekers submit memo to VC
FE Report | Wednesday, 22 October 2014
Aggrieved Dhaka University (DU) admission-seekers submitted Tuesday a memorandum to the vice-chancellor (VC), demanding review of the decision that banned the second-timers to sit for its placement test from the 2015-2016 academic year.
Six students, on behalf of their fellow protestors, handed over the memo to DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique at about 10:30am at his Registrar Building office.
Requesting review of the university's decision in the letter, they said following the DU's decision, other public varsities are also taking the similar policy, pushing the readmission-seekers into further uncertainty.
The agitators also warned of a mass gathering of the university admission-aspirants, guardians and teachers at the Central Shaheed Minar on October 25 (Saturday), if their demand is not met.
As part of their scheduled agitation, the students, who termed themselves as 'second-timers', started gathering at Oporajeyo Bangla on the university campus at about 10:00am and chanted slogans against the new decision.
The college graduates took to the street, following the DU's decision taken on October 14. It put a ban on students' appearing for the university's admission test second time 'to ensure fair contest among the candidates and evade massive migration of the enrolled students.'
Witnesses said DU proctor Amjad Ali took their banner away and threatened of police action, unless the students leave the university campus immediately.
"You aren't students of the university, so the movement must be out of the campus," he said.
However, defying the threat, the students continued their movement until 11:00am. They vowed to prolong their agitation until the authorities concerned reconsider their new admission policy.
In the previous years students had chance to attend the DU admission test for the second time. The results showed that a good number of them got chance second time.
However, the DU VC told the journalists that there is no scope for reviewing the decision.
Following the DU's decision, Jagannath University and Jahangirnagar University also took the similar admission policy that added fuel to the flame.
