DU announces largest budget

Dhaka University (DU) Wednesday announced the largest budget of Tk 1.64 billion in its history for the fiscal 2008-09 with a deficit of Tk 120 million.
DU Treasurer Syed Abul Kalam Azad placed the budget on the first day of the two-day annual senate session at the university's senate building with the vice-chancellor SMA Faiz in the chair.
The Treasurer also presented the revised budget of Tk over 1.55 billion of the fiscal 2007-08.
Of the total amount, Tk over 1.21 billion has been allocated for salaries, pensions and allowances of the teachers, officials and employees of the university, while Tk over 223.3 million for education and research and Tk 169.3 million for general activities and miscellany.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide about Tk 1.36 billion of the budget and internal earnings of the university has been estimated at Tk 161 million. Tk 120 million will be the deficit in the budget.
DU Treasurer said that they had been compelled to propose a deficit-budget although they were not willing to do so, as they had to emphasise education and research in the backdrop of present reality.
He said the amount, which has been estimated as deficit in the budget, will be spent if the UGC or the government provides it.
