A student of Dhaka University (DU) died after jumping off the 10th floor of 'Jamuna' block of Bijoy Ekattor Hall on the campus early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Kazi Firoz, a student of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture, under the 2019-20 academic session.
A resident of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Firoz hailed from Gopalganj district.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp, confirmed the student's death.
Firoz's bed-mate Masum Billah said, "Firoz had been frustrated for a while. Yesterday, he entered the room around 10:30 pm, prayed and asked if he owed us money."
"After sometimes, he left the room keeping his wallet and phone on the table. He looked quite depressed. I asked him where he would go. He said he's going to Bijoy Ekattor Hall for some work."
"Then I didn't ask anything," continued Masum, adding: "But minutes later, I heard a crowd scream that someone committed suicide."
We rushed there and found it was our Firoz."
The victim was taken to the DMCH, but doctors there declared him dead.
Later, a suicide note was recovered from his reading table.
It reads: "Human beings live for dignity. If there is no dignity, life is meaningless. Mother, I'm sorry that I couldn't keep my words."
The victim's body was sent to his hometown Gopalganj.
