DU, CCC announce budget

The Dhaka University Tuesday announced a budget of Tk 1.42 billion for the fiscal 2007-08 with only 10.35 per cent allocation of the total budget for education and research compared to that of the last year.
DU Treasurer Syed Abul Kalam Azad placed the budget on the first day of the two-day annual senate session with the university Vice-Chancellor SMA Faiz in the chair.
The treasurer also placed the revised budget of Tk 1.34 billion for the fiscal 2006-07 at the session.
Of the total budget, Tk 1.27 billion will come from the University Grants Commi-ssion (UGC). The own income of the university has been estimated at Tk 150 million this year.
However, no deficit has been showed in the proposed budget.
In the budget, Tk 1.16 billion has been allocated for salaries, allowances and pension of the teachers, officials and employees of the university, which amounted to 81.89 per cent of the total.
Tk 140 million for education and research and 140 million for general and miscellaneous activities have been proposed respectively.
Different fees including examinations will push up as the university authority has made a target to increase its internal in come compared with the previous year. The authority has also planned to enhance its income from Tk 2 million to Tk 2.5 million from the university's institutes.
The proposed budget, allocated Tk 30 million to construct a 44-flat tower for the young teachers, Tk 9 million to build housing for the third-class female employees, Tk 6 million to construct a building for the fourth-class female employees, Tk 10 million to construct a tower for fourth-class technical and non-technical employees, Tk 20 million for a new building Jagannath Hall and a floor at Amar Ekushey Hall and Tk 20 million for a Centre of Arts and Social Sciences Bhaban.
VC SMA Faiz at his welcome address spoke of different problems and development activities of the university.
He also made a clarion call to all to come forward, irrespective of parties and creeds and personal interest, to build up DU as one of the most reputed universities of the world so that it can play a pioneering role to lead the country to advancement.
Our Chittagong Correspon-dent adds: Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has announced today its revised budget worth around taka 2.43 billion for the 2006-2007 fiscal and the proposed budget amounting to taka 3.97 billion for the 2007-2008 fiscal without imposing any new taxes.
Acting Mayor of CCC Md Monzur Alam placed the budget in a meeting which was largely attended by the male Commissioners, Women Commissioners, officials and employees of the corporation and media persons at the CCC auditorium.
Referring to the wide ranging damages and losses caused to the roads , drains and culverts of the city due to recent excessive rain and water logging, the acting mayor told the audience that the CCC has been attaching much importance to repairing and reconstructing the damaged roads, drains and culverts.
Monjur Alam in his address also placed the different projects for obtaining necessary approval of the concerned ministry and allocation of fund in the next 2007-2008 fiscal for implementation of the proposed programmes and facilities needed for the Commercial Capital as well as other infrastructure development.
