Dhaka University (DU) Deputy Registrar Muhammad Lavlu Molla has been sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terorism Act.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia ordered to send him to jail, rejecting his bail petition after a hearing on Tuesday.
He was picked up on Monday night from his residence at the university officials' housing complex by the proctorial team and students after he allegedly posted a graphic on his Facebook page in support of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.
Later, they handed over him to Shahbagh Police Station, accusing him of 'disrespecting the verdict.'
According to police, Lavlu posted an 'objectionable' status on his Facebook page in reaction to the death sentence issued against Sheikh Hasina for crimes committed during the July uprising. A graphic containing Sheikh Hasina's photo with the caption "I don't care" was posted from Lavlu's account, which spread widely on campus, triggering backlash.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Monsur said, "Lavlu made derogatory comments on his Facebook page over the verdict. Around 1:30 am, the university's proctorial team and students brought him to the station."
Sources said Muhammad Lavlu Molla previously served as president of DU's Surja Sen Hall unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and later as a vice-president of the organisation's central committee.
