The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have recently made a decision to give advertisements of the university to only eight newspapers causing discontent among other 16 newspapers.
Earlier, the university for years was equally giving advertisements to 24 national dailies of the country following a two-month term for every four newspapers.
Recently, DU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Harun-or-Rashid in a syndicate meeting allegedly made the decision passed to advertise in only eight newspapers despite strong objection by some syndicate members.
The selected eight newspapers for DU advertisements include The Daily Prothom Alo, The Daily Star, New Age, The Daily Jugantor, The Daily Ittefaq, The Daily Inqilab, The Somokal and The Daily Amader Somoy.
The Financial Express, The Independent, The New Nation, The News Today, The Bangladesh Today, The Daily Naya Diganta, The Daily Amar Desh and The Daily Manabjamin are the 16 newspapers excluded from the advertisement list of DU.
DU Public Relations Director Md Ashraf Ali Khan Tuesday said, "I feel embarrassed whenever I make a request to the authorities of any of the newspapers, excluded from the list of DU advertisements, to give coverage of any of our events, as they don't care to remind me of the issue."
When contacted, DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique tactfully evaded his liability on the issue of giving advertisements to newspapers and asked this correspondent to talk to the DU Finance Committee for the same.
DU pro-VC and Finance Committee Chairman Prof Harun-or-Rashid said the syndicate in line with highest circulation of the newspapers approved the decision on publication of advertisements in eight newspapers.
