A female student of Rokeya Hall of Dhaka University committed suicide by hanging herself with the shower of the hall's bathroom in the early hours of Monday.
She was identified as Zahura Khan Progga (21), daughter of Nazimuddin Khan of Azmatpur village of Kaliganj Upazila in Gazipur and a second-year student of Law Department of the university.
The reason behind her suicide was not obviously known until Monday evening. Progga was a residential student of room No 13 at Chamely Bhaban of Rokeya Hall.
Progga's roommates said that she was speaking with somebody over mobile phone outside her room at around 1am Monday and at one stage at around 2 am asked her roommates to lie by shutting the door from inside.
"We have had no talk with her after 2.00 am Monday", Progga's friend Nipa said.
Students of the hall saw the body of Progga hanging from the shower of bathroom with her scarf in the early hours of morning and started crying.
On information, Shahbagh thana police recovered the body at 8 am and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Later, Progga's uncle Abdus Salam Khan received her body and took it to her village home in Gazipur by DU Medical ambulance at noon.
A friend of Progga said on condition of anonymity that Progga would love one Hindu boy and used to often talk over cell phone for long every night.
The university authorities filed an unnatural death case with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
Progga secured GPA-5 (A+) both in the SSC and HSC examinations and obtained fourth position in the Gha Unit admission test of DU.
