DU girl students seek alternative before 'Honours Bhaban' demolition

Wednesday, 4 June 2008

Students of Begum Rokeya Hall of Dhaka University demanded of the authorities Tuesday not to demolish the 'Honours Bhaban', already declared abandoned, before arranging adequate accommodation for them, reports UNB.

At present, a total of 103 students of different departments and sessions in the university reside in the 'Honours Bhaban' of the girls' dorm.

But without ensuring these students' accommodation, the authorities declared it abandoned on May 27 in a syndicate meeting and proposed reconstruction of a 10-storied building, instead.

As of other halls' students at the country's largest residential university, the Rokeya Hall girls have been facing a severe seat crisis.

To press home their demand some 80 students of Rokeya hall met Vice Chancellor SMA Faiz and Treasurer Rejaur Rahman at 10:30am.

In the face of their strong demand, both the VC and the Treasurer assured the agitated students of meeting their demand.

Students alleged that the hall provost informed them about the authorities' decision to demolish the hall building on June 1 when the summer vacation started and many students left the dormitory for home. The DU syndicate took the decision on May 27.
