DU halls should be reopened soon 'considering human dimension'

Wednesday, 5 September 2007

Former president of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) AAMS Arefin Siddique said the authorities should immediately reopen the DU halls taking sufferings of the resident students into consideration.
"The university can be reopened after some days to restore complete normalcy on the campus. But the dormitories should be reopened immediately so that the residents can get back to their dormitories", the former DUTA president told the UNB Tuesday.
Siddique noted that 90 per cent students of the university come from the country's rural areas. And 40-45 per cent of them bear their educational expenses by tutoring and doing various part-time jobs-and many of them even help their destitute families.
"We don't take such human dimension into consideration. But the reality is that many students risk losing their part-time jobs for lack of accommodation in the city, which may cause a human disaster", he said.
The senior teacher said immediate reopening of the dorms is also an imperative for the Judicial Inquiry Commission's fair investigation of the recent incidents, which led to the closure of the DU and other public universities.
"Without students' participation the investigation will not be complete and fair. So the authorities initially should open the dormitories for the students' accommodation", he opined.
He also demanded release of the two arrested deans of the university-Anwar Hossain and Harun-or-Rashid-as it will be helpful in removing the 'panic and sense of insecurity' prevailing among the teachers.
He said the administration always should be careful so that no 'overreaction' occurred after any incident.
"Overreaction is always dangerous. So the authorities, government and all other sides must be alert so that no overreaction does occur after any incident", he added.
Meanwhile, another DUTA executive member and its former general secretary Akhtaruzzaman welcomed the government stand on the reopening of the universities.
"I thank the government for upholding its democratic values. Now the university authorities should reopen the university as soon as possible by ensuring security and dignity of all members of the university, including teachers and students," he said.
