DU honours language hero Barkat 57 years after martyrdom

In a rare convocation, Dhaka University (DU) authorities Friday handed over the graduation certificate and mark sheet of language martyr Abul Barkat after 57 years of his martyrdom, reports BSS.
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique handed over the certificate of Abul Barkat, who embraced martyrdom during the 1952 language movement, to one of his close relatives.
MA Kaher, a cousin of Shaheed Abul Barkat received the certificate from the VC of DU at his office.
Prof Siddique said the university is proud to hand over the BA (Hons) certificate of language hero Abul Barkat even 57 years after his death.
Mentioning the certificate of Abul Barkat as a historical document, the VC said it is a historic moment for the university.
He said that thousands of brave sons had sacrificed their lives for the country and Barket was one of them. All these sacrifices gave us a language and a motherland, he added.
DU Pro-VC Prof Harun-Ar-Rashid, Dean of Social Sciences faculty Prof Shiekh Abdus Salam, DU controller of examinations Bahalul Haque Chowdhury and Proctor KM Safiul Islam were present on the occasion.
Abul Barkat was born on June 16, 1927 at village Babla in Bharatpur thana of Murshidabad, West Bengal and migrated to Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) in 1948. Barkat was the son of Shamsuddin. He passed his matriculation examination from Talibpur High School in 1945 and intermediate from the Krishnonath College in 1947.
