DU introduces Syeda Ali Afzal Award

A philanthropist has donated Tk 0.5 million (5 lakh) to introduce 'Begum Syeda Ali Afzal Memorial Award' in the Department of Linguistics of Dhaka University (DU).
Masarat Khan, daughter of Syeda Ali Afzal, handed over a cheque for the amount to DU Treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman Saturday.
Two students, one standing first class first in the honours examination of the department and another one from among the female students performing second best will be awarded gold medal and stipend from the earnings of the fund every year.
Begum Syeda Ali Afzal, born in 1909 in Murshidabad of West Bengal, was very keen about female education. Her husband K Ali Afzal was a joint secretary of the then Pakistan government. All of her 12 children are well-established in their respective fields. She died in 2009.
