The Dhaka University (DU) authorities celebrated the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate and world-renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore with a discussion and cultural programme on the campus on Friday.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam presided over the programme, while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Mohammad Almojaddidi Alfesani attended the event as the guest of honour.
Chairman of the Department of Bangla, Prof Dr Sirajul Islam, presented the keynote paper titled 'Rabindranath: The Poet of Peace and Humanity' at the discussion held at the university's RC Mazumder Auditorium.
Paying deep tribute to the memory of the poet, Prof Dr Abdus Salam said Rabindranath Tagore had elevated Bangla language and literature to a unique position on the global stage. He urged students to embrace Tagore's philosophy of education and become humane, creative, and morally responsible citizens alongside achieving academic excellence.
He further said Tagore taught humanity that a person's identity lies not in religion, race, or nationality, but in human values.
Following the discussion session, students and teachers of the university's Music and Dance departments jointly staged a colourful cultural performance marking the occasion.
