DU Prof Maksudur Rahman quits National Pay Commission

DU CORRESPONDENT | Friday, 16 January 2026

Professor Md. Maksudur Rahman Sarkar, chairman of the Department of Accounting at Dhaka University (DU), has resigned from his position as a member of the National Pay Commission-2025, citing the commission's failure to give due importance to the proposals concerning public universities.
He announced the decision at a press conference held at 11:00 am on Thursday at the Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom in the university's administrative building.
Speaking at the press briefing, Professor Sarkar said that during the first meeting of the National Pay Commission with the Finance Adviser on 18 August last year, a four-member subcommittee was formed following verbal instructions from the adviser and a written order issued by the commission chairman.
The subcommittee was tasked with formulating specific recommendations for all public universities in the country.
He said the subcommittee was assigned three specific terms of reference and, accordingly, prepared a total of 33 realistic and equitable proposals for public universities, recommending their phased implementation.
Professor Sarkar added that each proposal was supported by detailed justifications and one or more logical arguments.
In addition, most of the recommendations suggested linking salaries and allowances to performance and efficiency.
He, however, stated that after the commission's final report was approved at its last meeting on 8 January, it became evident that the proposals prepared for public universities had either been completely ignored or not considered at all.
