DU reclaims 2.5 acres land, to construct hall

DU Correspondent | Monday, 4 August 2008

Dhaka University (DU) Saturday reclaimed its 2.5 acres of land in the eastern part of Fazlul Haq hall for constructing a female students' hall after the land was in usurpation of Bangladesh railway employees and slum dwellers for five years.

DU Chief Security Officer Kamrul Islam told the FE that they could retrieve the land with the help a squad of 150 policemen led by Dhaka executive magistrate Kamruzzaman without facing any difficulty.

DU Proctor AK Feroze Ahmed and Treasurer Syed Abul Kalam Azad were present along with other university officials during the drive of recovering the land.

Earlier, the university authorities failed to repossess the land from the illegal occupiers of the railway despite serving them repeated notices to vacate the site.

Sources said the DU authorities bought the land from the government at a symbolic price. A decision was taken to construct a hall there for some 1,000 female students in 2003. The government allocated Tk 130 million for the construction of the hall under the annual development plan.

The university authorities could not start the construction work of the hall so far due to the illegal occupiers though the authorities received the allocated money three years ago.

When contacted, DU Treasurer said that the construction of the female hall would start in full swing very soon, as both money and land are now in the hands of the university authorities.
