DU relaxes English Dept admission rules

Tuesday, 14 October 2014

Dhaka University has relaxed the requirements for entry into its English Department. This happens after only two aspirants were found eligible to study the subject out of the thousands who sat for admission. The authorities have also decided not to allow a second try for those taking its entry tests, Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique told bdnews24.com after a meeting with the admission committee on Tuesday. “From the 2015-16 academic year, only those who pass HSC that year can sit for the admission tests at Dhaka University. Those who have passed before will not be eligible.” The English Department’s new entry conditions required candidates to secure 30 marks in ‘General English’ and 15 in ‘Elective English’. But the lowest mark for passing compulsory ‘Elective English’ in ‘Kha’ and ‘Gha’ unit tests was later lowered to 8 after the university failed to get eligible students other than the two who qualified, according to bdnews24.com.
