DU student commits suicide

DU CORRESPONDENT | Tuesday, 15 July 2025

A student of Dhaka University on Monday committed suicide stating guilt over "disturbing a person" and "doing wrong repeatedly" as the reason.
The deceased has been identified as Sanju Baraik, hailing from Chunarughat in Habiganj. He was a student of the 2020-21 academic session of the Department of Anthropology.
CCTV footage of Jagannat Hall shows that Sanju went to the rooftop of Rabindra Bhavan during the night and stayed there for over an hour and a half before jumping at 5:36 am.
Earlier, around 12:00 am, Sanju posted a status on his Facebook profile, apologising. In the post, he wrote, "I realised my fault. I have been disturbing someone day after day. It's not right for me to blame others. I apologise. I have done wrong repeatedly. If anyone was harmed by me, the responsibility is mine. I sincerely apologise to everyone."
Professor Dr. Debashish Pal, provost of Jagannath Hall, said that a staff member, who came to clean the area and rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of someone falling, found Sanju.
He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
