TAHMID SHAKIB | Thursday, 10 October 2024

Students boycotted the classes of at least 50 teachers of different departments and faculties of Dhaka University (DU) over their controversial remarks and for not standing with the students during the July-August mass movement.
Most of these teachers were involved with 'Nil Dal' politics, which was backed by the Awami League regime.
Thirteen of the boycotted teachers are from the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS). Two teachers were boycotted during the movement. Students have been adamant about not allowing these teachers to participate in academic activities.
FBS Dean Dr Mahmood Osman Imam said the students are participating in regular classes after they have accepted their demands regarding the boycott of particular teachers.
The teachers who have been boycotted include Professor Baitullah Quaderee of Department of Bangla, Professor Saiful Islam of Theater and Performance Studies, Assistant Professor Quazi Farjana Afrin of Islamic Studies, Md. Mahmudul Islam of Department of Urdu, and Lecturer Md. Rakibul Hasan of Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies. The students also boycotted classes of Dr. Md. Harunor Rashid Khan of Department of Soil, Water, and Environment, Md. Kamal Uddin of Department of Psychology, Chandra Nath Podder of Department of Mathematics.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "Complaints have been filed by the students against several teachers at the proctor's office. In response, fact-finding committees have been formed to investigate these complaints. During the investigation, these teachers will refrain from all academic activities. In some cases, with the dean's assistance, the faculty and students have boycotted certain teachers through academic committee meetings. The committee's decision will be considered final."
