Students of Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday padlocked the gates of academic and administrative buildings during their demonstration for the third consecutive day to press for their four-point demand, including cancellation of affiliation of seven colleges with the university.
Protesters and DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU) social welfare secretary Akhtar Hossain alleged that Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists assaulted them during the demonstration.
According to eyewitnesses, some leaders and activists of BCL went to the Vice-Chancellor's (VC) office and they unlocked the main gate of the office after a short procession, brought out from Aparajeya Bangla. The BCL activists assaulted them and they aided by Akhtar Hossain unlocked the gate.
BCL central president Rezwanul Hauque Chowdhury Shovon and DU unit general secretary Saddam Hossin led the BCL team on the spot.
BCL leaders said they went to submit a memorandum to the VC as per schedule.
But as VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman was not present in the office at that time, they submitted the memorandum through Pro VC Prof Dr Muhammad Samad.
At early hour of Tuesday, they locked the gates of Registrar Building, Arts Building, Business Faculty building, Mokarram Bhaban, Motahar Bhaban, Curzon Hall, Institute of Modern Languages and Social Sciences Building.
No classes were held nor any academic activities took place at DU due to their protest.
Apart from cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges, the DU students also demanded automation of the university's administrative and academic activities, control on movement of outside vehicles inside the campus and publication of the exam results within two months.
Earlier on July 17, about 500 students, under the banner of general students, took to the streets at Shahbagh intersection in the city on the same demand and they have continued their agitation to meet the demand in different ways.
