Demand for safe campus

DU students stage demo

DU CORRESPONDENT | Thursday, 7 March 2024

A good number of Dhaka University (DU) students formed a human chain on the campus on Wednesday, demanding restriction of external entry, control of free traffic and noise pollution-free campus.
They handed over a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor after holding a protest march at the foot of the university's anti-terrorism Raju Memorial sculpture.
The agitating students carried placards and shouted slogans 'We want a safe campus', 'Stop noise pollution', 'No drug consumption in campus area, 'Stop reckless driving', 'Dhaka University is not a tourist centre'.
They said outsiders' entry into the campus has increased. A few days ago, a drug addict harassed a female student on the campus.
Many vagrants are seen on the campus, making it unsafe for students. "We only demand that we want an environment-friendly campus," many an agitating student said.
Fahim Shahriar, a student of English department, said during holidays on Fridays and Saturdays, DU campus turns into a park.
Dhaka University has turned into a complete park on February 14 and February 21 during the book fair in the last one month, he also said.
Redwan Islam Rana, a student of International Relations Department, said women students are sexually harassed on DU campus, but the administration can offer nothing but consolation.
