DU, SUST VCs resign

Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Maksud Kamal, along with the provosts of seven university halls, has resigned following student protests, reports UNB.
The resignation letters were submitted to the Ministry of Education on Saturday, confirmed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Sitesh Basar.
The seven halls are Rokeya Hall, Shamsun Nahar Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Bangabandhu Hall, Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, and Salimullah Muslim Hall.
Earlier on Friday, a number of DU students staged a protest rally demanding resignation of the VC (administration and education), proctor, assistant proctor, treasurer, all provosts, and all senate and syndicate members, including Maksud Kamal.
Maksud Kamal had been appointed as the 29th Vice-Chancellor, succeeding former Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman, on November 4, 2023.
In another development, Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, also resigned from his position on the day.
The university's Public Relations office confirmed the resignation in the afternoon, stating the VC cited personal reasons for his decision.
It has also been learned Professor Ahmed submitted his resignation letter to the President, in accordance with protocol. Additionally, a resignation letter was addressed to the Deputy Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, following the instructions of the Chancellor.
Earlier, on Thursday, all members of the university's proctorial body, hall provosts, and assistant provosts submitted their resignation letters to the registrar.
