DU takes up projects to achieve SDGs: VC

16-day centenary programme begins on Dec 1

Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman on Saturday said the university authority is taking up and implementing various projects to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), build a university suitable for Fourth Industrial Revolution and create skilled human resources.
He said this while speaking at a "meet the press" held at Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom at the administrative building to brief reporters on the preparation for celebration of the university's 100th founding anniversary and the golden jubilee of the country's independence.
Prof. Akhtaruzzaman also highlighted the various activities undertaken by the authority concerned, marking the university's centenary.
About the Dhaka University Central Students' Union election, the VC said, "Now we are in the midst of centenary celebrations. But the DUCSU election is not irrelevant either."
He added: "It is important to strengthen democracy and promote democratic values with the cooperation of all quarters as expected. Keeping these in mind, effort to hold the DUCSU election has to be made."
DU Pro-VC (administration) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Samad and Pro-VC (academic) Prof. Dr. A.S.M. Maksud Kamal were also present at the press conference.
The authorities of Dhaka University have already announced the grand programme, marking its centenary. A 16-day programme is scheduled to begin on December 1.
President Md. Abdul Hamid will attend the inaugural programme as the chief guest while Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah, and DU Alumni Association President AK Azad as the special guests.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury will be present as guest of honour. Prime Minister of Bhutan Lotay Tshering and DU alumni will also address the programme virtually with DU VC Prof. Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.
President Abdul Hamid will launch books, photography albums and websites to be published on the occasion of the centenary of DU and the golden jubilee of the country's independence.
The 16-day ceremony will end on December 16 with a concert to be arranged at the central playground of the university. A documentary and theme song on the centenary of the university will be released.
