DU to announce Tk 2.3b budget

Dhaka University (DU) will announce its annual budget of Tk 2.3 billion tomorrow (Monday) for the fiscal 2010-11 allocating only 10.36 per cent of the total amount for the education and research sector.
DU Treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman will present the budget at 3pm on the day first of a two-day annual senate session of the university. The revised budget of Tk 1.98 billion for the fiscal 2009-10 will also be presented on the occasion.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide Tk 2.03 billion this year, while the university will mobilise Tk 260 million from its own sources to implement the budget, the DU treasurer said.
The lion's share (80 per cent) of the budget will be earmarked for salary, allowance and pension of teachers, officials and employees of the university like the previous years, he further informed.
Students will have to carry some extra expenses this year, as the authorities will increase the transport fee from Tk 650 to Tk 1080 and the transport infrastructure development fee from Tk 600 to Tk 1000.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) approved its budget of Tk 768 million for the fiscal 2010-11 in a syndicate meeting of the university June 23.
Of the total amount, the UGC will provide TK 713.5 million, while BUET will raise Tk 54.5 million from its income to implement the budget, said a press release Saturday.
