Dubai Taxi to hire 2,000 Bangladeshi drivers per year

FE REPORT | Friday, 28 June 2024

Dubai Taxi, a government-owned company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will hire at least 2,000 taxi and motorcycle drivers from Bangladesh annually.
As part of the programme, the Gulf nation will recruit 1,300 drivers this year, with 1,000 being motorcycle riders and 300 taxi drivers.
"The UAE will employ at least 2,000 taxi drivers and motorcycle riders from next year onwards," said Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury, state minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment. "This year, a total of 1,300 workers will be sent."
The state minister made the announcement following a meeting with Abdulla Ali Alhmoudi, the UAE ambassador to Dhaka, on Thursday at the Probashi Kallyan Bhaban in the capital.
Bangladesh and the UAE enjoy a long-standing friendly relationship, the state minister said, adding that sending skilled Bangladeshi workers would further strengthen these ties.
"During my visit to the UAE last month, I met with the chairmen or chief executives of 16 companies that employ Bangladeshi workers," Mr Chowdhury said.
"One of these companies was Dubai Taxi, which has already decided to begin recruiting skilled workers from Bangladesh," he added.
Echoing the sentiment of a strong friendship between the two nations, Ambassador Alhmoudi said the UAE values Bangladesh as a source of skilled manpower and that recruitment would further solidify this partnership.
"We will hire 1,300 taxi drivers and motorcycle riders this year," he said. "The plan is to increase this number to 2,000 annually in the coming years. These workers will be paid according to UAE labour laws."
Other officials present at the meeting included Md Ruhul Amin, secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare, Mallick Anwar Hossain, managing director of Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Ltd (BOESL) and Nasser Mohammed Alhaj Mudaffa, director of Dubai Taxi Corporation.
