DUCSU election

Monday, 11 March 2019

The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election and Hall Union elections are going to be held on Monday (March 11). Last time it was held 28 years back, in 1991.
The whole nation, especially the students' community, has been waiting for this election. People are more eager to see the environment for the election (whether students can vote freely and fairly) than the outcome of the election (who are going to win in the election).
We, common people, felt good when we saw almost all the candidates were busy in election campaign.
It is unfortunate that many students were forced to join the campaign of the students' wing of the ruling party. If any of the groups adopts unfair means to win DUCSU election, the students' community and the whole nation will be disappointed.
The voters will elect 25 leaders for the central union. The representation of the women candidates for the central is not proportionate to the male female voter ratio. Out of 229 candidates for central body, only 30 are females. Thus, only around 13 per cent women candidates compete at this level whereas the percentage of total women voters is around 38. Ideally, the number of female candidates could be much higher. Many think the patriarchal mentality is responsible for low representation of the females in the list of the candidates. It is expected that in the next DUCSU election, and elections of other students' union of other universities, the panels will maintain proper representation of the female candidates.
Other universities will keep a close eye on this DUCSU election and take lessons to avoid unwarranted developments.
