The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) staged a protest march at Dhaka University on Wednesday night, condemning the killing of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Sherpur and demanding justice for the ongoing election-related violence across the country.
The protest was organised in response to the death of Rezawul Karim, secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami Jhenaigati upazila unit, who was reportedly killed during clashes between BNP and Jamaat activists on Tuesday.
The march began at around 12:00 am from the VC Chattar and proceeded through various roads on the campus before concluding with a brief rally in front of the Raju Sculpture.
Addressing the rally, DUCSU Vice President (VP) Shadik Kayem strongly criticised BNP, accusing the party of engaging in violence and criminal activities.
"The BNP of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia no longer exists. After the July Uprising, people had hoped that the party would embrace responsible politics. But over the past one and a half years, BNP has been most associated with violence, extortion, and robbery."
He also claimed that more than 200 people had been killed due to the party's internal conflicts, questioning how a party that cannot ensure safety within itself could ensure the country's security.
Addressing BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, he said, "You once said, 'I have a plan'. But we now see that the plan is turning into nationwide violence, attacks on women, and chaos. There is still time, reform your party and bring the criminals to justice."
Other DUCSU leaders and students were present in the protest.
