Dudu\\\'s bail upheld, Rizvi\\\'s denied

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld bail granted to BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dudu in four cases of violence. The top appeal court also granted bail to BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed in five similar cases but refused it in one. The Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, gave the orders on Thursday after hearing the state’s petitions against bail given to the two BNP leaders. On July 7, BNP Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed had secured interim bail from the High Court in eight cases, while Dudu, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, managed to get in 7. The state moved the Chamber Judge’s court against those orders, when it was forwarded to the Appellate Division. On Thursday, the four-member bench led by the chief justice heard state pleas in six of Rizvi’s cases and four of Dudu’s. The BNP leaders were represented by Jainul Adedin, Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Sagir Hossain Leon, while Additional Attorney General Md Momtaz Uddin Fakir argued for the state. Bail in one case of Rizvi has been stayed, the rest two will be heard next week, said defence counsel Leon adding that Dudu’s bail in four cases were upheld. Police arrested Rizvi in the early hours of January 31 while Dudu was detained on January 12, according to bdnews24.com.
