Dumping needs to be stopped

Wednesday, 12 December 2007

ONLY a few months ago, the reconstituted caretaker government faced harsh criticism for its abrupt drive to evict hawkers from the city's pavements. It gave relief to the pedestrians and eased traffic movement to an extent. The drive threw thousands of people out of an income and left a negative impact on the economy. Later, for a correction, the government introduced holiday markets and reopened the pavements to the hawkers.
The hawkers are back on the pavements. However this issue is not the focus of this letter. Rather it is trying to point to the products available on the pavements. Not only the pavements, our shopping centres are also full of dumped products from abroad.
This matter should be taken into account by the authorities. Many of our consumers spend money without much thought. They do not distinguish between good and bad products in terms of quality. Import of low quality goods from abroad by spending our valuable foreign currency, without assessing our needs, is destroying our consumer habits, local industry and environment. The policy makers should look into the matter.
