Tuesday, 29 September 2009

The five-day Durga Puja, the greatest festival of Hindu community, ended Monday with immersion of idols of goddess Durga in the rivers all over the country while the Hindu community leaders praised the government for its all-out cooperation, reports UNB.
Thousands of jubilant Hindu devotees across the country took the Durga idols in processions to the riverbanks for immersion in the evening.
Devotees -- men, women and children dressed in their best -- celebrated Bijoya Dashami in the morning at around 24,000 Puja mandaps across the country.
Hindus believe Dashami is the day when goddess Durga accompanied by her children start for Kailash, her husband's abode.
President Zillur Rahman will host a reception to the leaders of the Hindu community at Bangabhaban today (Tuesday) at 5:00pm to mark the occasion.
Electronic media aired special programmes while newspapers published special supplements Monday.
In Dhaka city, thousands of men, women and children joined the processions with the idol to the bank of river Buriganga where it was immersed in the evening. The processions were brought out from different Puja mandops including Dhakeshwari temple. As many as 80 trucks carrying 38 idols of Durga were in processions to the riverbank.
Chief Adviser of the Bangladesh Sarbajaneen Puja Udjapan Committee Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta said Durga Puja was a part of their culture and Bangladesh was a bright example of communal harmony.
