DUTA demands lifting of State of Emergency

Wednesday, 22 August 2007

Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) has demanded withdrawal of the State of Emergency within 24-hours.
After an emergency meeting at Dhaka University Club Tuesday, DUTA demanded public apology from Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed for DU incidents.
The State of Emergency was imposed on January 11 following a fierce political turmoil over the January 22 abortive general elections.
DUTA General Secretary Anwar Hossain told UNB that the association decided to bring out procession today (Wednesday) towards the army camp at university gymnasium.
However, the authorities started dismantling the army camp from 8:15pm Tuesday.
Another report from Rajshahi adds: Teachers and students of Rajshahi University brought out a silent procession on the campus Tuesday protesting Monday's attack on DU students.
The teachers and students had altercations with police as they tried to intercept the procession. Later, the law enforcers allowed them to continue their protest programme.
The students and teachers demanded immediate withdrawal of army and police camps from the country's university campuses.
The procession, taken out from the university Arts Building, ended on the Library premises.
