Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) has demanded immediate and unconditional release of DU Islamic Studies Department Assistant Prof Muhammad Zahirul Islam.
DU teacher Zahirul Islam, son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Abdul Kader Mollah, was arrested from the city's CMM Court premises on July 14 as he went there to meet his father-in-law.
DUTA in an emergency meeting Friday night expressed grave concern over the arrest of DU teacher and asked the university authorities to provide necessary legal aid for the release of Zahirul Islam.
"The meeting, chaired by DUTA Acting President Prof Shahid Akter Hossain, expressed deep concern over the arrest of DU teacher and demanded his immediate release," DUTA General Secretary Prof ABM Obaidul Islam said Saturday.
The DUTA meeting also asked the authorities concerned to give Zahirul Islam due status as a university teacher and make no physical or mental torture on him, the DUTA general secretary said.
