Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Wednes-day demanded immediate cancellation of the deal with the Dhaka Club for using the historic Suhrawardy Udyan as a golf course.
The association termed the decision to allot the space to a particular stratum of people very unfortunate, surprising and unacceptable, as thousands of city dwellers including teachers and students of DU rush to the park for morning walks and recreation everyday.
In a written statement, DUTA acting president Tajmeri SA Islam and acting general secretary Mamun Ahmed said that the 'discriminatory' decision of the authorities concerned to allocate a portion of the Udyan for golf course has also shocked the feelings of DU teachers as well as the city dwellers.
"We fervently call upon the government to immediately scrap the decision of giving some 25 acres of land to the Dhaka Club for a golf course to keep the Udyan open for the greater interest of city dwellers and others", the statement said.
