DUTA leaders urge govt to free DU from BNP-Jamaat appointees

Monday, 25 August 2008

Leaders of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Sunday urged the caretaker government (CG) to take immediate steps to purge the country's premier educational institution from the clutches of "BNP-Jamaat appointees", reports UNB.

The DUTA leaders voiced resentment as the University is still being administered by those who, they said, directly work for BNP and Jamaat though the military-backed CG is a nonpartisan one.

"The recent Dean elections are a glaring example of the partisan activities of the present university administration. The treasurer was the election commissioner. But he himself and the Pro-VC directly campaigned for the candidates who are known to all as men of BNP and Jamaat," said DUTA executive member Harun-ur-Rashid.

He made the allegations while addressing a press conference at the Dhaka University (DU) Teachers' Club in the afternoon.

Former DUTA president and incumbent executive member AAMS Arefin Siddique, former general secretary Akhteruzzaman, former Dean of Biological Sciences Faculty Anwar Hossain, M Anwar Hossain of Microbiology Department and Associate Professor Mafizur Rahman of Mass Communication and Journalism Department, among others, were present at the press meet.
