The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has detected evasion of import duties amounting to Tk 198.88 million by four cell-phone companies, including state-run Teletalk, reports UNB.
The other three cell-phone companies are Robi (formerly known as AKTel), Warid and Banglalink.
Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate of the NBR unearthed the matter of duty evasion by the cell-phone companies, which was mostly done while importing telecommunication equipment and spare parts through fake-declaration and under-invoicing.
According to the Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate, state-run Teletalk evaded Tk 5.45 million, Robi (formerly known as AKTel) evaded Tk 44.67 million, Warid evaded Tk 43.48 million and Banglalink evaded Tk 105.20 million.
Teletalk evaded the duty in one consignment, Robi in two consignments, and Warid and Banglalink in three consignments each.
Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate sources said that they had taken the decision to scrutinise and examine the imported items by the cell-phone companies as they got information that some cell-phone companies are evading duties by fake declaration and under-invoicing.
After the examination of imported items the Director General of the Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate found that some cell-phone companies are involved in evading tax, that amounted to a huge figure altogether.
Director General of the Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate Shahabuddin Nagori sent a letter to the NBR chairman Dr. Nasiruddin Ahmed describing all this to him.
In the letter the DG said that Teletalk BD. Ltd evaded the duty while importing spare parts for the telecommunication industry (B/E No- C-169047, date- 30.12.2009).
Robi evaded the duty while importing two consignments this year (B/E No- C- 167247, on July 4) and (B/E No- C-181228, July 18).

The rest of the money is under the process of realization by Dhaka and Chittagong customs houses, the letter of the Director General of the Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate DG said.
