Duty on mobile phone sets, computer accessories may remain unchanged

The government might withdraw the Tk 300 customs duty levied on mobile and fixed wireless telephone set, sources said.
In the budget proposal, the government increased the customs duty of each mobile and wireless telephone set to Tk 500 from Tk 200.
Sources said the government might also reduce the 10 per cent proposed duty on computer software and accessories.
The government in its budget proposal withdrew zero duty on textile machinery, computer and computer accessories.
The local investors have been urging the government to withdraw duty on capital machinery to encourage industrialisation.
They also termed the budget as 'import-biased' following the government's proposal to completely waive the 4.0 per cent Infrastructure Development Surcharge (IDSC).
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) also faced opposition from importers following inclusion of cement clinkers in the list of items facing mandatory pre-shipment inspection.
