CHATTOGRAM, Nov 15: Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram has introduced six electronic gates (e-gates) in order to expedite immigration process at the airport.
State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mohammad Mahbub Ali inaugurated the gates on Tuesday evening.
Passengers bearing e-passports will be able to complete their immigration procedure in just 30 seconds through these gates.
The airport authorities hope that the immigration process through the e-gates will ensure high security during verification of travel documents.
The e-passport service was launched in the country two years ago. A total 12 e-gates were installed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on June 07.
According to the airport sources, immigration through e-gates will be completed immediately by checking all passenger information with the help of artificial intelligence. For this, there will be no need to stamp any passport. However, ordinary MRP (machine-readable passport) holders will not enjoy the e-gate facility.
The first step of immigration will be completed by scanning the first page of the e-passport containing the photo and other information and the barcode at the entrance to the e-gate. The second gate will also be opened instantly if the passenger's face matches the passport photo through camera-based facial recognition.
Director of Shah Amanat International Airport Wing Commander Taslim Ahmed said that this facility is being opened to speed up the immigration process and reduce the suffering and time of the passengers.
He said, "From now on, the entire process of immigration will be completed within 30 seconds."
He also said that the e-passport contains a microprocessor chip through which it will be possible to identify the passenger immediately after scanning the e-passport.
