Number of deaths caused by cancer can be reduced considerably if cases are detected and treated early, said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO's Regional Director for South-East Asia, reports BSS.
"Many cancers, such as cervical, breast and oral, have higher cure rates if detected early and treated according to best practices," she said in a statement ahead of the World Cancer Day that falls on February 4 (Wednesday).
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), every year cancer kills an estimated 1.1 million people in the South-East Asia region that includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor Leste.
