BOGURA, Oct 09: Early winter cabbage farmers of Shibganj upazila in the district are happy over the bumper production and fair market prices.
Favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-input have boosted the popular vegetable.
Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said early winter cabbage production is profitable.
They said over 550 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of cabbage this season.
In a recent visit at Muradpur, Tepagari, Malaher, Horipur, Lakshipur, Majhpara and Amjani villages under the upazila this correspondent found farmers are producing the vegetable with much enthusiasm.
A cabbage is being sold at Tk 25 to Tk 40 according to the size and weight in the retail market while Tk 20 to Tk 30 in the wholesale markets.
"I have cultivated cabbage on 80 decimals of land spending Tk 30,000", said farmer Ashraful Islam of Khamrpara village.
"I have already earned Tk 50,000 and expecting to make over Tk 0.2 million if the market price remain good", he added.
Local traders send the item to different district across the country as it has a good demand, said Abed Hasan of Mohasthan Haat.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Brozo Kishor Nandi said the department encourages the farmers to grow the vegetable in more land as it ensures good production and market prices.
