Earning from jute goods export doubles

The country's export earning from jute goods more than doubled in 2009-10 fiscal compared to the previous fiscal, officials said.
Jute goods export earning witnessed a 103 per cent jump last fiscal by exporting 577,000 tonnes of goods at above Tk 39.29 billion, which was Tk 19.34 billion in 2008-9 by exporting 482,000 tonnes, a high official of the department of jute (DoJ) told the FE.
The official mentioned that the raw jute export also saw a significant rise by above 24 per cent in 2009-10 fiscal.
He said that in 2008-9, the country exported more than 1.75 million bales of raw jute and earned Tk 9.21 billion, while in 2009-10 the price of the raw jute increased significantly in the international market and we earned Tk 11.308 billion by exporting only 1.59 million bales.
"Climate and environment consciousness is now growing among the people of the world and this (consciousness) has increased the demand of jute products against the plastic products around the world," the official said.
Mahmudul Haque Bhuyian, director general of the DoJ, expressed his optimism that the export of jute goods would cross 600,000 tonnes this year and earning would cross Tk 50 billion.
Meanwhile Jute and Textiles Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui informed that Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has bought about 4,500 tonnes of raw jute in the first five months of the current fiscal (2010-11).
He said the ministry fixed a target of producing 6.5 million bales of jute in 2010-11.
The country produced above 5.9 million bales of jute in the last fiscal year (2009-10).
