Earthquake in Chile
Friday, 4 April 2014
I heard from my expatriate friend in America that a strong earthquake of the magnitude of 8.2 has just jolted Chile. Later, I came to know it struck off the coast of Chile which led to five deaths initially and triggered a huge tsunami that pounded the country's northern coast with two-metre high waves. My friend was very worried as the area he lives in the USA is earthquake-prone.
Chile is one of the South America's most stable and prosperous nations. I felt sad to hear the loss of lives and properties there. Earthquake is one of the most terrible natural disasters as we cannot predict it. So, it is very difficult to minimise the damage. Most earthquake-prone countries border the Pacific Ocean, like Japan, Alaska, Chile and New Zealand.
Our country also is an earthquake prone country as it lies along the border of the Eurasia and Indo-Australia plate. Earthquakes usually occur when underground rocks suddenly break along a fault. Sudden release of energy causes seismic waves that make the ground shake. I find the whole scenario of earthquake very scary.
It reminds me that as human beings we are so helpless against the nature's fury. So, we must not meddle with nature and preserve it.
