East West RMG workers continue work abstention

Wednesday, 7 May 2014

GAZIPUR, May 6 (UNB): Workers of an RMG factory at East West Industrial Park in Gazipur continued their work abstention for the second consecutive day on Tuesday protesting alleged torture and intimidation by the park union leaders.
More than 1,000 workers and employees of the factory also laid siege to the Labour Welfare Centre in Tongi and held a rally in front of it Tuesday noon.
They submitted a memorandum to the assistant director of the centre,
alleging that the workers had been tortured and threatened by the leaders of six trade unions of the East West Industrial Park.
All the six labour unions were formed barely two months ago following the amendment to the labour law, the workers said. They alleged that the leaders of the trade unions were in fact serving the interest of the owners.
They urged the authorities to take immediate steps to stop attacks on them by the newly-formed trade union leaders.
Almas Khan, Sawkat Hossain and Tanya Akhtar, among others, spoke on behalf of the workers-employees at the rally in front of the Labour Welfare Centre.
