FE REPORT | Tuesday, 3 February 2026
The 25th Convocation of East West University (EWU) was held at Aftabnagar Playground in the city on Monday with great enthusiasm and participation, especially from the fresh graduates and their parents.
A total of 1,857 students of undergraduate and graduate programmes were awarded certificates at the event. Among them, nine exceptionally meritorious students were awarded gold medals.
Prof Mobasser Monem, Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), presented degrees to the students at the convocation as the representative of the President and the Chancellor.
Tapan Chowdhury, Managing Director of Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, was the convocation speaker. EWU Vice Chancellor Prof Shams Rahman gave the welcome speech.
Prof Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the EWU Board of Trustees and former governor of the Bangladesh Bank, also addressed the students.
Mobasser Monem told the newly graduated students that knowledge and skills become meaningful when they are rooted in moral principles. Moreover, he encouraged the students to love and take pride in their country.
Referring to current global realities, the BPSC chairman urged the youth to create a peaceful and livable world by reducing national and international unrest.
Emphasising the importance of taking proper care of the environment, he pointed out how the existence of humankind depends on it. Therefore, everyone has a moral duty to protect the deteriorating natural world.
Tapan Chowdhury reminded the students that the nation requires more than just a workforce; it needs ethical professionals and innovative problem-solvers.
Attractive salaries, designations, or beautiful profiles on social media are not examples of success. Success is what can impact society, the nation, and the world, he said, adding that success eventually appears after several attempts, he noted.
Prof Farashuddin stated that EWU has always tried to prioritise merit and to work with transparency.
He mentioned that he is optimistic about the EWU graduates, who are expected to contribute to building a society without discrimination in the future, with the kind of skills, ethics, and education they have acquired from here.
Prof Shams Rahman said the university spends 12 per cent of its earned revenue for the students in scholarships.
He asked the students not to remain obsessed with the 'comfort zone' of the satisfaction of earning a degree, as such satisfaction leads to inertia. Therefore, getting out of the 'comfort zone' is the only alternative to create a prosperous future.
He also called on students to become sensible citizens with a good sense of morality and humanity.
The convocation was attended by dignitaries from various institutions, members of the EWU Board of Trustees, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, the Treasurer, deans, department chairpersons, faculty members, officers, graduates, and their guardians.
