East West University won\\\'t hike tuition fees for 3 yrs

The East West University (EWU) authorities have announced there would be no tuition fee hike for the next three years from September, 2015, amid demonstration by private university students demanding the withdrawal of VAT on the universities. Private university students have been protesting against a government decision to impose 7.5 per cent VAT on private university education. They blocked Dhaka’s streets on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, bringing life to a halt, and forcing the government to issue a clarification that the authorities of the private universities would pay the VAT, not the students. But the agitating students remained unconvinced and persisted with their demonstrations, blocking busy Dhaka streets, including its main thoroughfares, leading to massive tailbacks across the city. EWU Proctor Anindita Pal announced the university’s decision on Sunday afternoon. “The university, in a meeting on Sunday afternoon, decided not to hike tuition fees for the next three years,” she said. “Students won’t have to pay the VAT,” she added. IUB’s Deputy Registrar Mona Rahman in a statement said the university would not realise the VAT from the students in compliance with an order issued by the National Board of Revenue, according to bdnews24.com.
